goats, while adorable, are also the bearers of delicious and magical milk. did you know this? i’m surprised by how many people don’t know that goat’s milk will not affect you if you’re lactose intolerant. what a world of possibilities this opens up! especially for people who don’t have cow’s milk or soy.
not all goat dairy products are readily available; the most common is goat’s cheese. but give goat’s yogurt a try. i have it almost every morning of the week on my muesli and berries. the st helen’s farm brand makes a really thick and creamy variety which i love, and also offer other flavours like strawberry and wildflower honey. they also make milk, butter, and cream (which made for an excellent dark chocolate fondue).
since there is no danger of me becoming fully vegan any time soon (only because of the soy allergy, seriously), i’m glad i don’t have to give this stuff up. it’s been so long since i’ve had cow’s milk and yogurt that i honestly don’t miss it and wouldn’t be able to tell you how it tastes differently. some people say that goat’s dairy tastes slightly bitter, which is why it’s probably a good idea to enjoy these products as part of a dish rather than on their own. my go-to breakfast all spring and summer involved a bowl of goat’s yogurt, a bit of muesli, a bit of ground flaxseed, and some fresh berries. if you’ve never had british raspberries, you don’t know what you’re missing. and blackberries too. mmmmmmmm. sorry, what was this post about?
as i see it, there are two drawbacks. [a] fresh and lovely goat’s dairy products are not widely available and [b] the stuff expires very quickly once opened.
my local mini market doesn’t carry the yogurt or milk, so it always involves a long trek to the bigger supermarket (tricky during a busy week). has anyone else out there found decent goat’s products at their local shop? what about fresh or organic stuff at a farmer’s market or similar? i wish my local saturday market sold it!
