Day Four: Roasting Up a StormPosted: December 17, 2009
Today was lip-smackingly good at school, and we had my favorite teacher guiding us in the kitchen (Sue, from the roasting demonstration two days ago). She is the best. As well as preparing all the food on our menus, she also showed us how to properly segment an orange – to make it look super professional, as though you were at a very fancy breakfast buffet. And I’m addicted. I spent all of our downtime today segmenting oranges. I think I need serious help.

- Roast shoulder of lamb with lamb gravy (featuring a splash tidal wave of red wine)
- Roasted potatoes (in duck fat, SO CRISPY AND DELICIOUS but I gained 5 pounds just looking at them)
- Green beans
- Mint sauce (I chiffonaded the mint leaves. Fancy)
- Plum and orange crumble (brought home for Phil to have for dessert – would have been fine for me and vegans to eat, except it has butter in the topping – note to self, make again using pure)
- Perfect orange segments (consumed during demonstration – bought 4 oranges tonight to practice on!)
We plated up and ate our roasts at lunchtime and it was unbelievably good. I definitely feel that I could make one of these meals myself. After learning about roasts the other day and making one today, it is ON in 2010. My meat-eating friends are invited to a serious Sunday roast chez moi. Phil can come too.
- Egg whites: meringue, pavlova, and chocolate mousse
- Baking: scones and cookies
- Pasta sauces: tomato sauce, pesto, and crab & chili dressing
AKA I left early. Seriously, the most amazing looking desserts were being passed around the room and I couldn’t eat a single one. It was very upsetting – once the scones with clotted cream and jam made the rounds I couldn’t take it any more. We were given a 10 minute break and I decided to grab my plum and orange crumble and make a run for it. Shame because I would have liked to see the pesto, but there was only another hour left in our day anyway.
Tomorrow looks much more Molly-friendly. We’ll see. Now I’m off to make dinner: a sweet potato and pea curry. Yum yum! Salmon and mango salsa will wait until tomorrow night, because I’m officially a fish snob and require only the freshest (sending Phil off to the fishmonger tomorrow to pick up some nice salmon fillets).
On a side note: I’m SO relieved that the British Airways strike is not going ahead. Our flight to Boston on December 28th was booked through BA, so thank goodness it will all be fine. I don’t think I mentioned this yet, but we’ll be in the States for two weeks after Christmas. This includes new year’s eve in Newport, new year’s day in New York (not city), a couple of days in Boston, and then five days in Austin for my great friend Cara’s wedding reception! A whirlwind but looking forward to it.
Anywho, hope everyone has smooth travels over the holidays. I know how hectic it can get. I’ve never once had a Christmas/new year’s without some form of traveling (usually pretty far too) so the thing I’ve learned is just to breathe, charge all your ipods and iphones well, and stack up on the most entertaining and ridiculous magazines you can find at the airport.
